Container Gardening

October 23, 2024


Topic: Container gardening in Florida is a great way to grow plants despite the state’s climate challenges. Warm temperatures and high humidity favor tropical plants, provided containers have good drainage and protection from intense sun. 


With the right soil, watering, and fertilization, you can enjoy a thriving container garden year-round. Whether you have a sprawling landscape or a simple balcony, container gardening is the answer to keep your Florida home fragrant and blooming!

Did you ever wonder about the artist behind this sculpture in downtown Stuart?


Speaker: Geoffrey C. Smith is a local sculptor and world-renowned artist. His art is displayed in high profile homes, offices and public spaces from Stuart’s Sailfish Circle to the Vatican. We are honored to have him speak to us about his passion for immortalizing and protecting Florida’s wildlife. The sculpture below graces our butterfly garden in IRP. Be sure to visit his gallery in Port Salerno and downtown Stuart.

Florida Oceanographic Society

January 15, 2025


Topic: An overview of the center and advocacy and research being conducted. Since 1964, the Florida Oceanographic Society’s mission has been “to inspire environmental stewardship of Florida's coastal ecosystems through education, research and advocacy.” Today we learn how much they have grown over the past 60 years and what the future holds for our oceans.

Restoring Our Native Orchids

February 19, 2025


Topic: Our program will cover a topic that is vital to keeping Florida as unique as its name, the Native Orchid! Imagine the land as it once was; wild, floral and fragrant. We are fortunate to have two speakers that are experts in their fields of biologic conservation. Carly and Nick have both worked to preserve our state’s natural resources and beauty. They will cover the efforts of local organizations to restore Florida’s native orchids and how we can help.

David “Nick”  Nickerson: After serving in the US Air Force, earning 3 degrees in Biologic Sciences, Nick served as Marine Biologist for the FL Dept of Natural Resources, was President of the Martin County Orchid Society and is a board member of MC Florida Native Plant Society. 


Carly Batts: As a major impetus behind native orchid conservation, Carly is President of the MC Native Plant Society, Chairperson for MC Native Orchid Restoration Committee, a multi-certified botanist, and earned her BA in Environmental Science and is currently pursuing a Masters in Soil & Water Science.

The Art and Science of Companion Planting & Fruit Tree Guilds

March 19, 2025


Topic: Join Sean McBride, a seasoned permaculture expert, for an in-depth exploration of sustainable gardening practices centered around companion planting and fruit tree guilds. This engaging presentation will cover the relationships between plants, from maximizing growth and yield through strategic plant pairings to creating thriving, self-sustaining ecosystems within your garden.


Learn how to build a resilient edible garden system by enhancing soil health and the importance of composting and mulching to nurture a fertile growing environment. Special emphasis will be placed on integrating native plants to support local pollinators and maintain ecological balance. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just beginning your journey into permaculture, this talk will provide valuable insights into creating a productive, harmonious garden.

Annual Year End Meeting & Member Appreciation

April 16, 2025


Please join us for our 75th Year End Meeting and Member Appreciation Event

We end the season with a review of our club’s accomplishments and recognize those special members who helped us achieve our club’s goals. We will also install officers for next season.


A delicious hot buffet luncheon is planned and will be served in a private room overlooking the Marina on the Manatee Pocket, Port Salerno.


The Luncheon includes three entrées, two sides, house salad, homemade rolls and dessert, nonalcoholic beverages, and coffee.


There is Valet Parking and an elevator available for your comfort. Afterwards you may want to explore the marina and the Fish House Art Center and Gallery.
